Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional facilities across Lagos State, in a move aimed at decongesting overcrowded prisons and strengthening ongoing criminal justice reforms.
The decision, which was carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring fairness, humanity, and efficiency within the justice system.
According to official sources, the inmates granted freedom were carefully selected based on recommendations from relevant authorities. Factors considered included the nature of their offenses, duration of incarceration, health conditions, age, and demonstrated good behavior while in custody.
This development is part of broader efforts by the Lagos State Government to address long-standing challenges of congestion in correctional centers—an issue that has continued to raise concerns about inmates’ welfare and the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the exercise is not just about reducing overcrowding but also about giving deserving individuals a second chance at life. He urged the freed inmates to reintegrate positively into society and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
