The Independent Broadcast Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to publicly apologise and retract a remark made against Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television.
In a strongly worded response, IBAN described the ministerโ€™s comment as inappropriate and unbecoming of a public office holder, stressing that such statements undermine the dignity and professionalism of journalists in Nigeria.
The association, which serves as the umbrella body for privately owned broadcast stations across the country, warned that failure to issue an apology could lead to a collective boycott of the ministerโ€™s media briefings by its members.
According to IBAN, respect for journalists and the media space remains critical to sustaining democracy and transparency. The body emphasized that public officials must uphold responsible communication, especially when addressing members of the press.
The development has sparked conversations around press freedom and the relationship between government officials and media practitioners in Nigeria. A potential boycott, if carried out, could significantly impact coverage of activities within the Federal Capital Territory.
As of the time of filing this report, the FCT Minister has yet to issue an official response to the demands.
