HURIWA Urges DSS to Arrest Sunday Igboho Over Alleged Threats
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to invite and, if necessary, arrest Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, over alleged threats directed at opposition politicians in the South-West region of Nigeria.
In a statement released on Tuesday, HURIWA expressed concern over what it described as โ€œdangerous and inflammatory remarksโ€ reportedly made by Igboho in a viral video circulating online. The group warned that such statements, if left unchecked, could heighten political tension and disrupt the fragile peace in the region.
HURIWA emphasized that Nigeriaโ€™s democracy must be protected through adherence to the rule of law, stressing that no individual, regardless of status or influence, should be allowed to make statements capable of inciting violence or intimidating political actors.
The association further urged security agencies, particularly the DSS, to act swiftly by investigating the matter and taking appropriate legal steps where necessary. According to the group, timely intervention would serve as a deterrent to others who may attempt to use threats as a tool in political discourse.
Sunday Igboho, a prominent figure in the Yoruba Nation movement, has remained a controversial voice in Nigeriaโ€™s socio-political space, often making headlines over his outspoken views on regional autonomy and governance.
As of the time of filing this report, the DSS has not issued any official statement regarding HURIWAโ€™s request, and there is no confirmation of any arrest or formal invitation extended to Igboho.
The development has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with some supporting the call for accountability, while others view it as an attempt to silence a vocal regional activist.
Observers note that how authorities respond to this situation may have broader implications for political expression, security, and civil liberties in Nigeriaโ€™s evolving democratic landscape.
