Court Jails Five Men for Exhuming Corpse, Removing Eyes for Rituals in Gombe
In a shocking ruling, a High Court in Gombe State has sentenced five men to varying prison terms for exhuming a corpse and removing its eyes for alleged ritual purposes in Kwami Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly took place at a Muslim graveyard in Gadam Village, where the suspects dug up the grave of Malam Manu Wanzam and removed both eyes. The act was uncovered after concerned residents alerted the authorities.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence linking the accused to the crime, while some of the defendants admitted partial guilt. Justice Abdulsalam Mohammed, who presided over the case, condemned the acts as both inhumane and unlawful, stressing that such ritual-related crimes will not be tolerated.
The sentences handed down to the convicts include:
Mohammed Isah – 5 years imprisonment
Adamu Nasiru – 4 years 6 months
Manu Saleh – 2 years 6 months
Umar Jibrin – 2 years 6 months
Kawuni Sarki – additional prison terms for separate charges
The court emphasized that the sentences are to run consecutively, underscoring the seriousness of the offenses.
Authorities in Gombe State have reiterated their commitment to curbing ritual-related crimes and urged residents to report suspicious activities promptly. Community members have welcomed the judgment, saying it will serve as a deterrent to others considering similar criminal acts.
