๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Nigeria Must Learn from Iran, Not Rely on US for Security โ€” Falana

Veteran human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to strengthen its own security architecture instead of depending on the United States for national protection.
Falana made the remarks amid rising global tensions linked to the Middle East conflict involving Iran and the United States. He argued that Nigeria should learn from the Iranian experience by building robust domestic security forces rather than placing excessive trust in foreign powers.
According to Falana, Nigeriaโ€™s security challenges โ€” ranging from banditry and terrorism to communal violence and kidnapping โ€” cannot be effectively addressed by external intervention.
โ€œNigeria must rely on its own armed forces and police structure to guarantee internal security,โ€ Falana said. โ€œThe lessons from Iran and its engagement with global powers should remind us that no foreign country has a longโ€‘term stake in Nigeriaโ€™s peace and stability except Nigerians themselves.โ€
He also stressed that meaningful reforms to Nigeriaโ€™s security architecture โ€” including training, intelligence capabilities and accountability โ€” are urgently needed to confront the countryโ€™s complex security dynamics.
Falanaโ€™s comments have added to growing discourse within Nigeria about the best path toward peace and stability. Many analysts and public figures have also called for increased investment in domestic security institutions, even as the federal government continues diplomatic engagement with global partners.
As national debate continues, Falanaโ€™s position underscores a broader push for selfโ€‘reliance and sovereign control over Nigeriaโ€™s security agenda.
